On the eve of the first day of school, sitting at the inside dinner table for the first time in months, we looked back at our summer and reflected on our favorite parts. We were all struck by how many "firsts" this summer included for the girls: biking, sailing, water skiing, swimming with no floaties, seeing lightning AND a rainbow at the same time, new friends, first summer camp, kayaking, trail biking, running the Montpelier Mile, reading an entire book, making strawberry-currant-gooseberry jam, spending a whole week without parents at cousins' house, kayaking to Day's store and back and the list goes on and on for each of them. We parents were just along for the ride and loving it. And as a true sign of an excellent summer, in the last three days in two very different contexts, this identical phrase was uttered by each girl, "This is the best day of my life!" May there be many more.
